Belagavi man arrested for brutal attack on anganwadi worker over flowers

A shocking incident of violence took place in Belagavi district of Karnataka on Wednesday, when a man chopped off the nose of an anganwadi worker with a sickle, after accusing her children of plucking flowers from his garden. The accused, identified as Basavaraj Patil, was arrested by the police and booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Anganwadi worker suffers severe injuries

The victim, Shobha Patil, is an anganwadi worker at the government primary school in Kudachi village of Raibag taluk. She lives with her husband and two children in a rented house near the school. On Wednesday morning, she was getting ready to go to work, when Basavaraj Patil, who lives in the same locality, barged into her house and attacked her with a sickle. He accused her children of plucking flowers from his garden and damaging his plants. He then slashed her nose with the sharp weapon, leaving her bleeding profusely. He also threatened to kill her if she complained to the police.

Shobha Patil was rushed to the Raibag government hospital by her neighbours, who heard her screams. She was later shifted to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) for further treatment. According to the doctors, she has suffered severe injuries to her nose and face, and will require plastic surgery to reconstruct her nose. She is currently stable and under observation.

Police nab the accused and register a case

The police swung into action and arrested Basavaraj Patil from his house. He was taken to the Raibag police station and interrogated. He confessed to his crime and said that he was angry with Shobha Patil’s children for plucking flowers from his garden. He said that he had warned them several times, but they did not listen to him. They demanded strict action against the accused and adequate compensation for the victim. They also sought protection and security for the anganwadi workers, who are often subjected to harassment and violence by anti-social elements.

They also appealed to the state government and the district administration to provide financial assistance and medical expenses for her treatment.
