Apple is reportedly working on adding a new capacitive button to the iPhone 16 series, which could be used for camera-related functions. The button, internally known as the “Capture Button”, is part of a project codenamed “Project Nova”, according to MacRumors.

What is the Capture Button?

The Capture Button is a new button that would be located on the right side of the iPhone 16, slightly below the power button. The button would not be a physical one, but a capacitive one that detects pressure and touch, and provides haptic feedback. The button would use force sensors and reluctance motors to simulate the feeling of a mechanical button.

The Capture Button is expected to be one of the main features of the iPhone 16 series, which is likely to launch in 2024. However, the exact function of the button is still unknown. The name suggests that it could be used for taking photos or videos, or accessing the camera app. It could also be used for other features, such as scanning QR codes, launching Siri, or activating Apple Pay.

Why is Apple Adding a New Button?

Apple is known for its minimalist design philosophy, which favors simplicity and elegance over complexity and clutter. The iPhone has traditionally had only a few buttons, such as the power button, the volume buttons, and the home button (which was replaced by Face ID on newer models). The iPhone 15 Pro models introduced a new button called the Action Button, which can be customized to perform different tasks, such as opening the Control Center, switching between apps, or taking screenshots.

iPhone 16 Rumored to Have a New ‘Capture’

The addition of the Capture Button could be seen as a way for Apple to offer more functionality and convenience to its users, without compromising on the aesthetics and usability of the iPhone. The button could also be a response to the competition from Android devices, which often have more buttons and features than the iPhone. For example, some Sony Xperia phones have a dedicated shutter button for the camera, which is located below the power button on the right side of the phone.

What Else is New with the iPhone 16?

The iPhone 16 series is expected to have several other improvements and changes, besides the Capture Button. According to various rumors and leaks, the iPhone 16 could have:

  • A capacitive Action Button, which would replace the mechanical one on the iPhone 15 Pro models. The Action Button, codenamed “Project Atlas”, would use the same technology as the Capture Button, and offer more customization options.
  • A redesigned camera bump, with a vertical arrangement of the lenses, similar to the iPhone 12. The base model iPhone 16 and 16 Plus would also have a third camera lens, which could be a telephoto or an ultra-wide lens.
  • A relocated mmWave cutout, which would be moved to the left side of the phone, under the volume buttons. The mmWave cutout is a small hole that allows the iPhone to connect to the 5G network in some regions.
  • A smaller notch, which would house the Face ID sensors and the front-facing camera. The notch has been a controversial feature of the iPhone since its debut on the iPhone X, and many users have hoped for a smaller or a notchless design.

The iPhone 16 series is still in the development stage, and many things could change before its official launch. Apple could also decide to scrap the Capture Button project, or modify it in some way. Therefore, it is advisable to take these rumors with a grain of salt, and wait for the official announcement from Apple.
