Muharram commemorates the death of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Hussein Ibn Ali. Hussein was murdered during the battle of Karbala by Caliph Yazid and the battle took place on the day Ashura. Even though he was slain in the battle, his victory and message of justice, kindness and equality still live among his followers. So the Muslim mourn and remember the bravery of the Prophets family.
Ashura is the 10th day of the Muharram. On the day of Ashura people observe fast and show their gratitude towards Allah. Muharram is an important holy day for Muslim. Muslims engage on mourning rituals and some gather at mosques to cry for Hussein’s death. Several Sunni Muslims observe a fast on the day of Ashura to thank God for saving Moses and his followers. Shia wear black on this day and take part in processions to mark Ashura. During the processions, called “Matam”, men beat themselves with a whip on their bared backs. Muslims make donation to the poor during Muharram.
