OnePlus Open: A rebadged Oppo Find N3 for the global market

OnePlus has confirmed that its first foldable smartphone, the OnePlus Open, is essentially the same device as the Oppo Find N3, which is expected to launch in China soon. The two phones were jointly developed by teams at both companies under the direction of Pete Lau, the co-founder of OnePlus and the chief product officer of Oppo.

A shared vision for foldable phones

In an email to The Verge, OnePlus said that Lau led the collaboration between OnePlus and Oppo to create a single foldable phone that will be released under different names in different markets. The company did not specify which markets will get which phone, but it is rumored that the Oppo Find N3 will be exclusive to China, while the OnePlus Open will be available internationally.

The OnePlus Open is set to launch globally on October 19th, and it was recently spotted in the hands of Indian actress Anushka Sharma, suggesting that it will also come to India. The phone will feature the signature OnePlus alert slider, which lets users switch between different sound profiles.

A foldable phone with flagship specs

The OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3 are expected to have similar specifications, based on leaks and rumors. The main display of the phone could be a 7.82-inch AMOLED panel, while the cover display could be 6.31 inches. The phone could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is the latest flagship processor from the chipmaker.

The phone could also have up to 24GB of RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage, which are impressive numbers for any smartphone, let alone a foldable one. The battery capacity could be 4,520 mAh, and it could support 100W fast charging and wireless charging.

The camera department could also be impressive, with a triple rear camera setup consisting of a 50MP primary sensor, a 48MP ultra-wide lens, and a 64MP periscope telephoto lens. The selfie camera could be a 32MP shooter.

The software of the phone could be Android 13, with ColorOS 13.1 in China and OxygenOS 13 in other markets. OxygenOS is the custom skin that OnePlus uses for its phones, and it is known for its smooth performance and minimal bloatware.

A new chapter for OnePlus and Oppo

The OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3 are not the first products that OnePlus and Oppo have collaborated on. The two companies are part of the same conglomerate, BBK Electronics, and they have shared resources and technologies in the past. For example, the OnePlus 9 series and the Oppo Find X3 series have similar designs and features, such as the Hasselblad-branded cameras and the 65W fast charging.

However, the foldable phone is a new territory for both brands, and it shows their ambition to compete with the likes of Samsung and Huawei in the premium segment. The foldable phone market is still nascent, but it is growing rapidly, and it offers a lot of potential for innovation and differentiation.

OnePlus and Oppo have not revealed the pricing and availability details of their foldable phones yet, but they are likely to be expensive, given the high-end specs and the complex engineering involved. However, they could also offer a compelling alternative to the existing foldable phones in the market, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Huawei Mate X2.
