The Powerball lottery has reached a staggering $835 million for the drawing on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023, after no one matched all six numbers on Monday night. This is the fourth-largest jackpot in the history of the game, and the second-largest this year.

How to play and win the Powerball

To play the Powerball, you need to buy a ticket for $2 and choose five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls, and one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball. You can also add the Power Play option for an extra $1, which can multiply your non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times.

The drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET. You can watch the live drawing on TV, online, or on the Powerball app. You can also check the winning numbers on the Powerball website or on the app.

To win the jackpot, you need to match all five white balls and the Powerball. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338. The jackpot starts at $20 million and grows by at least $10 million every time there is no winner.

The jackpot is not the only prize you can win. There are nine ways to win a prize, ranging from $4 to $1 million. Here are the prize levels and the odds of winning:

Match Prize Odds
5 white balls + 1 red Powerball Jackpot 1 in 292,201,338
5 white balls $1 million 1 in 11,688,054
4 white balls + 1 red Powerball $50,000 1 in 913,130
4 white balls $100 1 in 36,526
3 white balls + 1 red Powerball $100 1 in 14,495
3 white balls $7 1 in 580
2 white balls + 1 red Powerball $7 1 in 701
1 white ball + 1 red Powerball $4 1 in 92
1 red Powerball $4 1 in 38

If you win a prize, you have two options to claim it: cash or annuity. The cash option is a one-time lump sum payment of the estimated value of the jackpot, which is $390.4 million for the current drawing. The annuity option is a series of 30 annual payments that increase by 5% each year, which adds up to the advertised jackpot amount of $835 million.
