A 20-year-old man allegedly killed his parents and sister with an axe in their sleep in Nagaur district of Rajasthan on Saturday. The accused, identified as Ramesh, surrendered to the police on Sunday morning and confessed to his crime. He claimed that he was mentally unstable and had no motive for the gruesome act.
The night of horror
According to the police, Ramesh attacked his father Ram Singh (50), mother Sita Devi (45) and sister Rekha (18) with an axe around 11 pm on Saturday, when they were sleeping in their house in Kuchaman city. He then locked the house from inside and stayed there with the dead bodies till the next morning.
The incident came to light when the neighbours noticed that the door of the house was not opened till late in the morning. They informed the police, who reached the spot and broke open the door. They found the three bodies lying in a pool of blood and Ramesh sitting in a corner.
The confession and arrest
The police took Ramesh into custody and interrogated him. He reportedly told the police that he was suffering from some mental illness and had no enmity with his family. He said that he did not know why he killed them and regretted his action.
The police recovered the axe used in the crime and registered a case of murder against Ramesh. They also sent the bodies for post-mortem and informed the relatives of the deceased. The police said that they were trying to ascertain the mental condition of Ramesh and the possible trigger for his violent behaviour.
The background and reaction
Ramesh was the eldest son of Ram Singh, who was a farmer and also ran a grocery shop in the city. Ramesh had dropped out of school after class 10 and helped his father in the shop. His sister Rekha was studying in class 12 and was preparing for her board exams.
The neighbours and relatives of the family expressed shock and grief over the incident. They said that the family was well-respected and had no disputes with anyone. They also said that Ramesh was a quiet and obedient boy and never showed any signs of aggression or mental disturbance.
