A young couple from Byndoor in Udupi district, Karnataka, has received a special honour from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their noble gesture of cleaning the Someshwara beach instead of going for a honeymoon. The couple, Anudeep and Minusha, were invited to witness the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi on January 26, 2024, after their story was mentioned by the prime minister in his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’.

A unique way of celebrating love

Anudeep and Minusha tied the knot in November 2020 and decided to spend their honeymoon by cleaning the local beach near their home. They collected over 4,000 kg of waste from the beach and disposed it off in a proper manner. They also planted saplings along the beach to enhance its beauty and ecology.

The couple said they wanted to do something meaningful and useful for the society instead of spending money on travelling to far-away places. They also hoped to inspire others to take care of the environment and contribute to the Swachh Bharat Mission.

A recognition from the highest office

The couple’s selfless act caught the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised them in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on December 26, 2020. He said that the couple had set an example for the youth and the nation by showing their love for nature and cleanliness. He also urged the listeners to follow their footsteps and make cleanliness a part of their daily lives.

As a token of appreciation, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) sent an invitation to the couple to attend the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. The couple, who are both engineers by profession, were delighted and honoured by the gesture. They left for Delhi on January 24, 2024, and expressed their gratitude to the prime minister and the government for recognising their work.

A role model for others

The couple’s story has also inspired many others to take up similar initiatives in their areas. Several local groups and organisations have joined hands with the couple to clean and beautify the Someshwara beach and other nearby beaches. The couple has also received appreciation and support from the district administration, the local panchayat, and the public.

The couple said they will continue their mission of cleaning the beaches and spreading awareness about environmental issues. They also appealed to the people to avoid littering and dumping waste on the beaches and other public places. They said that everyone should do their bit to make India clean and green.
