UPS expects high demand for delivery services
UPS, the world’s largest package delivery company, announced that it expects to hire over 400 seasonal workers in the Memphis area before the holiday season. The company said it is filling full-time and part-time seasonal positions, including seasonal delivery drivers, CDL drivers and package handlers, in hundreds of locations across the country.
The company said it anticipates a high demand for delivery services during the peak holiday season, which runs from October through January. UPS said it expects to deliver more than 800 million packages globally during this period, up from 762 million in 2022.
Seasonal workers can earn competitive wages and benefits
UPS said that seasonal hourly pay rates begin at $21 per hour for package handlers and driver helpers, and $23 per hour for driving jobs. The company also offers a variety of benefits for seasonal workers, such as health care, retirement savings, tuition assistance and employee discounts.
According to UPS, many seasonal workers have the opportunity to transition to permanent positions after the holidays. The company said that over the last three years, about 35% of its seasonal hires were later hired in a permanent role.
Memphis is a strategic hub for UPS operations
Memphis is one of the key hubs for UPS operations in the U.S. The company operates a major air cargo facility at the Memphis International Airport, which handles about 250 flights per day and employs more than 5,000 people. The facility is also the home base for UPS Airlines, the company’s air freight subsidiary.
In addition, UPS has several ground delivery centers in the Memphis area, which serve customers in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Missouri. The company said it plans to expand its presence in the region by investing $216 million to build a new package sorting and delivery facility in Olive Branch, Mississippi, which is expected to create 1,400 new jobs by 2025.
